Miss Lyndel A. Woodruff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Woodruff of 115 Bridge St., has been selected by the Senior Class and faculty of Northampton High School as the DAR Good Citizen of 1963. A Pro Merito student for four years, she has been vice president of that organization.

Twenty-seven persons were treated at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital emergency suite for injuries due to the icy conditions in the area from Saturday morning to yesterday noon. Injuries, none of them major, included broken arms and legs, contusions and bruises.

Northampton will apply for a $5 million federal grant to help fund a major expansion of the Hotel Northampton. And an attorney for the hotel owners said they are willing to begin discussions on developing more affordable housing in the city whenever the city is ready.

All Northampton residents living in one- and two-family houses will have to set aside their bottles, cans, newspapers and cardboard for pickup by the city beginning this fall. A mandatory recycling ordinance passed by the City Council last night will affect some 8,000 households and go into effect a week after a state-funded Materials Recovery Facility in Springfield goes into operation this fall.

Former state Rep. Nancy A. Flavin of Easthampton has a new job at the controversial temporary courthouse in Hadley that she was instrumental in building. As assistant clerk magistrate of Ware District Court, Flavin will make $62,280 a year and will work for her one-time legislative colleague William P. Nagle Jr. of Northampton, who hired her.

City resident Mark Carmien is the proud new owner of Pride & Joy, the Crafts Avenue store specializing in books, gifts and information for the gay, lesbian bisexual and transgendered community. He bought the business from Karen and Beth Ballavance-Grace, who had run it as what they termed a “Mom and Mom” operation for the past five years.
