50 Years Ago

∎ Police hustled to a Kingsgate Plaza supermarket last nightwhen it was reported an intruder had been seen prowling in the store. It proved to be, instead, a sheepish employee, who admitted having been locked in.

∎ Policewoman Helen F. Gawron of Fort Hill Terrace observed her 47th birthday yesterday at a family party at Alexander’s restaurant. City Clerk James E. Faulkner, her brother, was toastmaster.

∎ Concerns about who would run a proposed ice rink in Northampton surfaced during an hourlong discussion of a proposed skating arena commission. At issue is the seven-member commission to oversee operation of a municipal skating rink that could be built at the Three-County Fairgrounds.

∎ People with conflicting views on skateboarding are working on ways to protect both public safety and the rights of skateboarders. The skateboarding ordinance committee of the Youth Services Council met to develop three work groups that will meeting again Feb. 25 to draft a proposal to the youth council.

∎ A four-day school week, a shorter school year and teacher layoffs are some of the ideas being floated by state and local leaders as they grapple with anticipated midyear budget cuts. While it’s unclear whether the ideas are practical, or in the case of a shorter school year even legal, the fact that officials are casting such a wide net shows how worried they are that schools could feel the brunt of cuts.

∎ Days after local residents returned from Washington, D.C., and speaking out against a war with Iraq, organizers for a local activist group will be on the streets asking residents to help by donating soap, toothpaste and other such necessities to be sent to Iraq.
