The official dedication of the new B’nai Israel Synagogue and community center on Prospect Street will be held this weekend. The three-day dedication program will begin tomorrow evening with special services conducted by Rabbi Arthur Langenauer.

A 59-year-old Florence cafe proprietor was treated at Cooley Dickinson Hospital early this morning after being beaten up outside his establishment. David Condon suffered a badly injured left eye and was beaten around the head and face. He is proprietor of Slattery’s Inn at 91 Main St.

Circulation manager Daniel J. Cronin Sr. has left the Daily Hampshire Gazette after working at the newspaper for more than four decades. Cronin, 54, will take a job Feb. 1 at Smith Charities, succeeding clerk-treasurer Donald J. Shea, who retires Jan. 31.

Ann L. Dunphy has been appointed Northampton’s representative to the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority’s board of directors by Mayor David B. Musante Jr. Dunphy is the director of community relations for Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

Good Thyme Deli on Main Street expanded this month, taking over space it formerly shared with Bananarama. Bananarama, known for its large selection of smoothies and other frozen-yogurt creations, has decided to focus on its Amherst location.

To weather a mid-year drop in state aid to the tune of $700,000, Mayor Clare Higgins has imposed both a hiring freeze and a spending slowdown, asking all department heads to keep a tight fist on their budgets.
