∎ Kollmorgen Corp. today announced the appointment of Arthur R. Fichter as director of marketing. He will be responsible to the executive vice president for planning and directing the marketing of Kollmorgen products and engineering services.
∎ The University of Massachusetts Dames Club (for student wives) will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday in Middlesex dormitory. A homemakers bazaar will be held. Members and guests will be invited to participate in the popular television panel game “I’ve Got a Secret!”

∎ Amherst resident Jane F. Garvey is scheduled to be sworn in today as the state’s commissioner of public works. The Statehouse ceremony will be conducted by Gov. Michael S. Dukakis.
∎ New England Telephone Co. is planning to renovate its Northampton facility at 61 Masonic St. and to add 50 to 100 new employees there by mid-summer. The move will mark the first time the telephone company has had a significant number of employees in the Northampton area since it closed its business office at 395 Pleasant St. in August 1984.

∎ Plans for an upscale new 125-room hotel on Route 9 in Hadley were announced today by the project’s developer, Hampshire Hospitality Group. The newly announced hotel will be built on the site of the old Hadley Tire and Auto Center, at 439 Russell St.
∎ Maine’s Field, one of three sites where the city deposits its excess snow, has been closed to private vehicles and will remain so as long as people keep “trashing” it by dumping garbage there, the head of the public works department said Sunday.
