50 Years Ago

The 5-cent American flag stamp went on sale at the Northampton Post Office this week. For the first time in postal history, a regular stamp is issued that does not contain the words,” United States” or the abbreviation, or the word “postage.”

Thomas R. Jekanowski, district manager of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. here, was recipient of an award for guidance and training in establishing life underwriter training courses at the monthly meeting of the Pioneer Valley Life Underwriters Association held yesterday at the Hotel Northampton.

After years of extermination efforts and weeks of controversy last spring, cockroach infestation is still a problem at the Florence Heights project on Florence Road. A handful of tenants have complained they are still plagued by the insects and also have seen large numbers of a winged black bug they had not seen before.

The search for a vice principal at the John F. Kennedy Junior High School should be reopened, but the position may not be filled until after a permanent principal is appointed, said Superintendent John J. Feeney. A new vice principal is needed to replace James K. McDonald, who retired Dec. 31.

Tests taken at the Hilltown Cooperative Charter School indicate that low levels of cadmium and arsenic and higher levels of lead are present in the school. But the results did not indicate “an imminent hazard,” the report states.

The Northampton Council on Aging is awaiting the result of a feasibility study on its preferred choice for the location for the proposed new senior center, the Roundhouse parking lot downtown. If the Roundhouse parking lot doesn’t work out, the council’s next two choices are the land next to the new Elks lodge on Spring Street in Florence and the Florence Community Center.
