‘Hadleyopoly’ real estate goes quickly

The Hadley-inspired version of the classic board game will go on sale Saturday as a part of a wider effort to raise money and awareness for the Hadley Farm Musuem.

The museum, which features antique farming implements and exhibits detailing the history of agriculture in the area, has struggled with membership and attendance in recent years, said volunteer Lisa West.

The Hadleyopoly drive has brought some wanted attention, she said.

“It means everything,” West said. “This is an incredible gift to the Farm Museum.”

The effort was spearheaded by Hadley native and School Committee member Thomas Waskiewicz, who was concerned with the museum’s struggles.

“Hadley has a rich farming background. It’s what makes Hadley Hadley,” Waskiewicz said.

Hadleyology, he said, is a fun way to highlight the town’s agricultural heritage and the museum.

Waskiewicz said the plan initially was to make 100 boards and sell them to benefit the museum.

“But the board game has taken on a life of its own,” he said. “It’s really caught fire.”

Interest from local businesses and civic organizations in purchasing a slot featuring their name on the board was so strong that the board itself had to be made 2 inches larger than a normal Monopoly board. Each slot sold for $250 to help pay for the production of the board.

Ultimately, 500 boards were produced by TigerPress of Northampton, Waskiewicz said.

Matt Herbert, a 2005 graduate of Hopkins Academy and graphic designer at Yankee Hill Machine Co. in Florence, designed the board, Waskiewicz said.

The game is designed with Hadley history in mind. The game pieces include a farmer, tractor and horse, among others. Instead of building houses, one builds barns. And instead of drawing chance cards there are Town Meeting cards that test players on their knowledge of Hadley trivia.

The game will cost $30 with all proceeds going to the farm museum. It is a limited edition and will be on sale at the Hadley Garden Center, Barstow’s Dairy, the North Hadley Sugar Shack, Easthampton Savings Bank, Whole Foods and Flayvors.

Waskiewicz said the hope is to raise $10,000. The money will go toward developing a self-guided audio tour of the museum, enabling visitors to explore exhibits while listening to descriptions of what they are seeing.

“There is so much to see and learn in the farm museum. There are thousands of items,” Waskiewicz said. “I want to bring them to life.”
