The Northampton branch of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom has voted to send a letter to President Kennedy commending his lifting of the Cuban blockade, and urging that the government work toward resumption of normal relations with Cuba.

Last night Northampton firefighters went to the Manhan meadows where the summer cabin of Louis Leclair of Holyoke was afire. It was caused by an overheated wood-burning stove, officials said.

Lori Gallivan, Easthampton’s new Junior Miss, is only the second girl to be named to the post without having been a finalist in the talent competition. Gallivan won the title yesterday.

Preliminary work is set to begin next week on the long-delayed King Street reconstruction project, but there will be no construction until the spring, Richard Barber, a supervisor with the Massachusetts Department of Public Works, said today.

Hundreds of volunteers turned out to serve and deliver the Thanksgiving dinner at the Edwards Church on Main Street. Crews packed and delivered a total of 900 dinners to people’s homes.

The rapid growth of cell phones, caller-ID technology and answering machines, combined with the public’s growing resistance to opinion surveys, are making it more difficult for pollsters to do their jobs. “I think that polls face increasing obstacles and barriers,” said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center for the People & The Press.
