50 Years Ago

■ If you wish to find the antidote to “Beatlemania,” don’t miss the Wilbraham Academy Glee Club coming to the Florence Congregational Church Sunday evening at 7. They will sing a program of sea shanties, folk songs and spirituals.

■ James Cahillane, who served Northampton as mayor for three terms, and who has been active in Democratic politics in this state for several years, today formally announced he would be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Hampshire County register of deeds.

25 Years Ago

■ Savarese Chevrolet will move as planned to its new location off Bridge Road this weekend, but without a permit for storage of bulk oil, waste oil and gasoline. The City Council tabled action on the permit when no Savarese representative appeared at last week’s meeting. “I don’t need a storage tank to operate,” Ronald Savarese, president of the firm, said Monday.

■ Gov. Michael S. Dukakis says an open-enrollment plan he proposes would ensure equity among school systems while allowing parents for the first time to transfer their children out of their home districts. Hampshire County educators question how the plan can be implemented.

10 Years Ago

■ Citing the need to spend more time developing his medical practice, Board of Health Chairman Dr. Richard Brunswick handed in his resignation this week. Brunswick had served the Board of Health since spring 2001, and was named its chairman in March 2003.

■ For the last 20 years, visitors to the Emily Dickinson family gravesite have found just a replica of the original iron gate in the fence surrounding the markers. Now the real thing may have been recovered in Newfane, Vt. Vermont authorities Thursday seized from a South Newfane antiques store a gate believed to be missing from Amherst.
