Gazette food columnist Lucy Pickett checks out bizarre fair foods

Summertime is fair time and that means it’s time for my annual fair food roundup from around the country.

I have a certain fascination for the crazy foods these fair vendors invent. I always have fun researching them and wonder what they will come up with next.

Following are the concoctions I found most notable.

Bacon-wrapped pork belly and mashed potato croquettes served on a skewer with gravy. Porky!

A grilled cinnamon bun sandwich with a bacon, peanut butter and marshmallow cream filling. I’ve noticed bacon finds it’s way into a lot of these creations.

Roasted corn on the cob coated with crushed Doritos and drizzled with nacho cheese. Who doesn’t like Doritos?

Deep-fried Twizzlers. Like Twizzlers aren’t strange enough.

Pizza burrito. A tortilla filled with pepperoni, Italian sausage, risotto, mozzarella and marinara, all wrapped in a flour tortilla. A real mixed bag.

A Belgian waffle served on-a-stick with bacon in the batter, dipped in chocolate, drizzled with maple syrup, and topped with whipped cream and bacon. Yikes!

A Krispy Kreme Doughnut Ice Cream Chicken Sandwich. A crispy chicken breast and vanilla ice cream between glazed doughnuts. Then it’s topped with Fruity Pebbles cereal and syrup. Holy overkill.

Let’s not forget the exalted corn dog, but made with hot Cheetos for the coating. Yum, Cheetos, best junk food ever.

Any healthy stuff? Good luck. Enjoy fair season.

Who eats this stuff? Seriously.

I mean it’s really unhealthy, doesn’t sound particularly tasty and must cost an ugly penny.

But I just experienced a moment of painful truth: I realized I would probably try every single food item you mentioned.

So, I guess I should have typed:

Hey, I resemble that remark.

So, go forth all of our readers, and enjoy that fair and it’s food.

It’s summertime and the eating is easy.
