Portabella catering service in Amherst closes

Kristine and Raphael Elison, who have operated Portabella Catering since 1995, decided to close both operations for what Kristine Elison describes as a mid-life change.

“We feel incredibly lucky that our business has been so successful,” said Elison. She noted that store sales have been growing and Portabella continues to have many regular catering clients.

The last catering event she handled took place at the president’s house at Amherst College Thursday.

Portabella specialized in homemade and all-natural food at its catered events, and the store had numerous prepared meals, soups and salads and desserts for sale. The store also featured local products, such as cheese, breads, salsa, milks, pickles and fermented teas, made throughout the Pioneer Valley.

Elison said she is grateful for the many loyal customers over the last two decades.

“In the end, I am excited to pursue other interests, and a few new business possibilities,” Elison said.

Very very sad to see them close. Great food, great service, great people. They filled a big need for those of us who wanted to eat well but were short of time. Wishing all of the Portabella folks the best for the future. I'll sure miss you! Linda Smircich
