Ashley Novak, an employee at Cedar Chest in Thornes Marketplace in Northampton, was on a quick work break when her decidedly 1960s-era outfit — miniskirt and opaque tights — caught our eye. Novak, who is also a student at Smith College, says she admires styles from the ’60s and ’70s, and especially likes the looks of models like Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick. The team learned how her loves of color and thrift shopping influence her unique style.

Color Philosophy: I’m really into jewel tones so I figured I might as well put as many on as humanly possible.

Sweater: I just got this at the Salvation Army, actually, but it’s from Talbots. It’s super soft.

Scarf: I just really like orange, but I don’t like to wear a lot of it, so I figured a scarf is probably the best way to go.

Skirt: This is from Forever 21, florals (are) always classic, especially black and white.

Tights: This is my favorite color ever, in the world, like oxblood and deep burgundy.

Shoes: I like loafers a lot. They make me feel like a librarian.

Ring: We sell it at Cedar Chest. ... I had to debate about it for a really long time, but I love it. I’m making payments on it — it’s that kind of investment.

Online Thrifting: I do a lot of shopping on etsy, because it’s like the only place to find good vintage stuff for cheap. I never have time to actually go shopping, but I do have a lot of time to spend on my computer because that’s all you do in college.

Thrift Shop Rationale: You can usually find older stuff, which is made better than stuff is made now, so it lasts a lot longer.
