NORTHAMPTON — City police are warning area merchants to be alert for counterfeit $100 bills.

Northampton Police Detective Lt. Jody Kasper said several area businesses have been given the phony bills over the last four days.

She said the counterfeits can easily pass for the real thing. Merchants who have been given the bills were unaware they were fake until notified by their banks after depositing them.

Police said the fake bills have a different texture than standard bills and are slightly smaller.

Anyone with information about the counterfeit bills or who may have received one should contact Northampton police at 413-587-1105.
