Amherst police disperse student crowd Saturday at Townhouse Apartments, make arrests
AMHERST — A North Amherst apartment complex where thousands of college-aged people celebrated St. Patrick’s Day earlier this year was the scene of another large gathering Saturday afternoon.
Detective Jamie Reardon said Sunday that several police officers responded mid-afternoon Saturday to Townehouse Apartments, 50 Meadow St., after a crowd of college students looking to party during the first full weekend back in town began to swell. Townehouse has become a popular area to party because of its large, open grassy areas, as well as numerous student rental homes on the opposite side of Meadow Street.
“The busiest areas were definitely at the Townehouse quads and across the street,” Reardon said.
The department had additional police officers on duty, successfully dispersing most people before it got dark and making some arrests during the incident, Reardon said.
Reardon said one police officer who was struck with a thrown beer bottle was not injured.
