Attempted armed robbery at Sunderland liquor store is foiled
SUNDERLAND — An attempted armed robbery Friday afternoon at the Spirit Shoppe was foiled by an employee who refused to comply with the would-be robber’s demand.
Around 2 p.m., according to Police Chief Jeffrey Gilbert, a Caucasian male with a white knit mask with holes cut for his eyes brandished a large knife, confronted the employee and demanded cash.
When the employee didn’t comply, the man fled on foot. Witnesses saw him pull off his cap as he fled into the trees behind the 7-Eleven Plaza, into the area of the apartment complex there.
Police used a K-9 to track the suspect but lost the scent in the area of Silver Lane, which runs parallel to Amherst Road, also known as Route 116.
The suspect was wearing a black Adidas windbreaker, Gilbert said, and gray or white pants, with black sneakers. He is described as 5 foot 8 inches to 5 foot 10 inches tall with black hair and somewhat heavyset. The investigation is ongoing.
Sunderland police ask that anyone with information call the 24-hour dispatch at 413-625-8200 or the Sunderland Police Department.
