Key dates on road to casino

Here are some key dates for the western Massachusetts proposed casino projects:

July 16: Springfield voters approve MGM Resorts International’s plan to build an $800 million casino resort complex in the city’s south end, by a 58 to 42 percent margin.

Sept. 10: West Springfield voters head to the polls to weigh in on Hard Rock Hotel & Casino New England’s $800 million project proposed for that city.

September through November: Public hearings expected on the suitability of the casino resort developers based on investigative reports by the Gaming Commission’s investigations and enforcement bureau.

October: Palmer residents are expected to vote on Mohegan Sun’s proposed nearly $1 billion casino resort on 152 acres off the Massachusetts Turnpike in Palmer on a date to be announced.

Dec. 31: Final casino applications due at the Massachusetts Gaming Commission offices.

April 2014: Gaming Commission is expected to issue casino resort licenses no later than this month, including one license for a location in western Massachusetts.

2016: If approved, a casino resort would likely open sometime in 2016.
