Helen Wise: Taxation, not resolutions, top issue for this voter
To the editor:
I commend Councilor Gene Tacy for speaking up at a recent Northampton City Council meeting and on the radio on behalf of property owners of modest means — the elderly, disabled, single parents, single people and others who were struggling to pay their swiftly rising property taxes before last month’s override vote.
For these groups, simply dealing with regular bills and trying to keep a roof over their heads can be a nightmare. We need to represent everyone, he said of the council, and how right he is!
I for one would like to see the City Council devote far less of its time and energy to resolutions and far more serious attention to the implications of regressive taxation and marked income inequality right on its doorstep. If you agree with me, please contact your ward councilor and councilors at large. Otherwise, I fear the very real hardships of a large but neglected minority of city residents will simply be swept under the political carpet to await the next highly orchestrated, well-financed override campaign.
