State Police identify Corey Navarette as man fatally shot in Orange

The Massachusetts State Police have identified the 23-year-old man who was fatally shot and killed by police in Orange early Wendesday morning.

Corey Navarette of 18 Mechanic St. in that town was killed in his apartment after allegedly confronting state troopers with a gun. The Northwestern district attorney’s office is reviewing the use of deadly force. State police have not revealed the identity of a 25-year-old woman who suffered an eye injury during the incident in the second-floor apartment of the building where Navarette and the woman lived.

The state police Special Tactical Operations (STOP) team was executing a search warrant shortly after 5 a.m. as part of a narcotics investigation conducted by the state police detective unit for Hampshire and Franklin counties when the shooting occurred.

Navarette and the injured woman were targets of the investigation. “A trooper or troopers” fired their weapons at Navarette after he confronted them with a gun, state police said Wednesday in a statement.

The search warrant was part of an investigation into alleged sales of oxycodone and Percocet, and the state police detective unit had information that Navarette had access to and could use firearms. According to state police, investigators found a second firearm in the room where Navarette had allegedly confronted the troopers.
