David Katz: Use override proceeds to restore teaching positions
To the editor:
I am the parent of a child who goes to the JFK Middle School. I am pleased that the override won. However, I am very concerned as to the priorities in selecting which school positions will be restored.
It is my understanding, after reading a recent edition of the Gazette, that the School Committee intends on restoring the two associate principal positions at NHS and JFK, but only “some” of the teaching positions.
If that’s true, that would be a very poor and short-sighted decision. The teaching positions are the critical ones, both for current and future students. The associate principal positions were only recently added, and their importance frankly pales in comparison to that of the teachers.
I wholeheartedly supported the override. However, I would be extremely disappointed if the restored funds were not used to restore the teaching positions, as opposed to the two administrative ones. Many other “yes” voters would be similarly upset.
