Jay Franklin sentenced to 2½ years in prison for 2012 crash that killed Emily Savery of Middlefield

Jay Franklin of Upton was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to motor vehicle homicide and drunken driving charges in a February 2012 accident that killed Emily Savery.

The Republican reported that Savery’s father asked for a long sentence, while her mother asked for a shorter sentence and a requirement that Franklin speak to teens about the night Savery was killed.

The judge eventually accepted the sentence recommended by prosecutors and the defense.

Savery was in Franklin’s car when he hit a tree stump and overturned. He told police he had been drinking vodka.

On Monday, Franklin told the court he will be sorry for what happened for the rest of his life.
