Motorist strikes car, house, tree after swerving to avoid squirrel in Northampton

Adam P. Surgen, 36, of 73 Barrett St., Apt. 5147, was traveling west on Bridge Street about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday when he swerved to avoid a squirrel in the road and lost control of his vehicle, according to police.

Surgen’s car crossed over the median, struck an oncoming vehicle continued across the oncoming lane, struck a tree stump near 369 Bridge St., spun around and came to a stop after slamming into the house at 357 Bridge St.

The driver of the vehicle Surgen struck, Lindsay Fennell, 26, of 1 Adams St., was not injured, according to police.

A female passenger in Surgen’s car was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital for complaints of minor injuries, police said.

Her condition was not immediately available from the hospital.

The house Surgen struck sustained damage its siding, but was cleared by the city building inspector as being safe.

Surgen was cited by police for a marked lanes violation.
