GREEN HERON HUNTING

Rail Trail, South Amherst

Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely of Amherst

Once spring arrived, each time I walked the South Amherst portion of the Rail Trail I watched to see if the green herons had arrived. Even so, I almost missed this one. It blended in quite well with the branches and shadows at the edge of a small pool at the side of the trail. I didn’t see it until it moved. I watched it catch one small frog and then patiently wait for another. I captured the shot with a medium telephoto lens on my tripod-mounted DSLR camera.

Anne E. Ely is affiliated with the Robert Floyd Photo Gallery, 2 East St., Southampton. Other nature images are on view there Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m.
