Rebecca Hull: More lap swim time needed in Amherst
To the editor:
I am an adult who appreciated that the War Memorial Pool was available last summer during noon time for lap swimming. To have lanes partitioned off and/or exclusive times for adults is essential if you are serious about getting exercise in a pool. While I appreciate that the town has as a priority to teach all kids to swim, I do not feel it is fair that all weekday times for lap swimming in this part of town have been deleted for the sake of families that complained that there was not enough time for open swim.
Now families are allocated six hours a day and adult swim is no more. There is a sentiment that whoever complains the loudest should get what they want and according to the people in charge that is what has happened. No compromise.
If we teach all our youth to swim and then as adults they are unable to swim laps because the pool is there solely for swim lessons and to service open family fun swim times, why must everyone learn to swim? Honestly what recreation has Amherst offered to the non-family adults in town? Most of our resources are for the kids. Let’s discuss a compromise, so that the adults have an hour each mid-day at the pool. If you would like to bring back noon-time lap swimming during week days at the War Memorial pool this summer, please contact Linda Chalfant of Leisure Services (259-3103). She needs to hear the other side of the story and the fact that adults are requesting services too. Thanks and fingers crossed.
