Students, parents and teachers happily trooped into the elementary school gym, where they spread out blankets for a potluck fare, including popcorn popped on site.

Riddle, 68, was busy greeting new arrivals. Most came wearing blue-and-yellow school T-shirts with the initials “RFKRR” emblazoned on the front.

School staff said Riddle, who was named principal of the elementary school in 2006, told them she did not want a big public event to mark her retirement.

“She just wanted a family party,” said Sharon Matrishon, the school’s administrative assistant.

As a surprise for Riddle, Matrishon said a new scholarship fund to support full-year attendance in after-school programs has been created. So far, nearly $1,000 has been raised for the Margaret Riddle Youth Enrichment Scholarship.

Sarah B. Madden, principal of Brayton Elementary in North Adams, takes over as principal July 1.
