UMass hockey signs Brandon Wahlin
The University of Massachusetts hockey team, which had trouble scoring at times last year, officially added a player who did plenty of it in juniors.
Brandon Wahlin, a 5-foot-9 forward from White Bear Lake, Minn., signed with the Minutemen Thursday and will be a freshman in the fall. Wahlin is the Austin (Texas) Bruins’ all-time leading scorer with 33 goals and 76 assists in 115 regular season games over two years.
“Brandon is a dynamic and creative offensive player who has certainly rounded out his game over the course of his two years in Austin,” UMass coach John Micheletto said in the release from the athletic department. “He’s going to be an impact two-way player for us that can get after it on the defensive end, turn pucks over and get us headed north in transition as quickly has he can. His speed is going to be an element that we rely on an awful lot moving forward. For all of those reasons, we’re excited to add Brandon to our family.”
UMASS SOFTBALL PLAYERS HONORED — Senior outfielder Cyndil Matthew and junior first baseman Tiffany Meeks were both named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Northeast Region team Thursday.
Meeks, who hit hit .352 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs was named to the first team. Matthew who hit .380 with 31 stolen bases was chosen for the second team.
