Robert Wales of Easthampton faces attempted murder, assault and battery charges for allegedly choking mother

Robert C. Wales of 391 Main St., Apt. 110, pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault and battery.

He was released after posting $1,000 bail and agreeing not to go near his mother.

Police Chief Bruce McMahon said Wales’ mother called police at 3:47 p.m. to report her son had attacked her while intoxicated.

She said he punched her and then choked her on her couch until she couldn’t breathe while repeating, “I’ll kill you.” Then he abruptly stopped, and she ran to her neighbor’s apartment to contact police, McMahon said.

McMahon said the woman suffered abrasions and bruises on her neck and face. She was treated at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton and released later Sunday.

Wales is due back in court on June 14 for a hearing to decide if the case will go to Hampshire Superior Court.
