Wednesday’s colleges: UMass baseball holds on to beat Quinnipiac

The University of Massachusetts baseball team jumped out to an early lead then held on to beat Quinnipiac 11-8 in Hamden, Conn., Wednesday.

UMass led 3-0 after three innings, but the Bobcats tied it with two runs in the fifth. A five-run sixth gave the Minutemen an 8-3 lead, but Quinnipiac made it interesting with four runs in the eighth to pull within 10-8.

Rich Graef (two RBIs) and John Jennings (three RBIs) each had three hits, while Nik Campero (two runs) and Bryan Dionicio each had two for the Minutemen (11-25).

Amherst native and Bobcats catcher Steffen Herter went 1-for-5 for Quinnipiac (10-30).

Eastern Connecticut 13, Amherst 7; ECU 6, Amherst 3 — Mike Odenwaelder (two RBIs) had three hits, while Bob Cook (three RBIs) had two hits for the Lord Jeffs in Game 1.

Taiki Kasuga had three hits and two RBIs in Game 2 but Amherst (20-11) dropped the doubleheader in Mansfield, Conn.

MCLA 4, Elms 2 — Andrew Sadowski of Northampton pitched a scoreless inning of relief but the Blazers (19-17) fell in North Adams.

Women’s lacrosse

Regis 20, Elms 8 — South Hadley natives Chelsey Grabowski and Nora McDonough each scored twice but the Blazers (5-10) fell in the NECC tournament.
