Sydne Didier: Doctor’s attention made difference for adopting parents

To the editor:

I wanted to thank the Gazette for its recent article on open adoption and to share our family’s appreciation for Dr. Stephen Hickman, who was featured in the piece.

More than 12 years ago, my husband and I were pre-parents, going through the adoption process and seeking a pediatrician who could evaluate the medical report we would soon receive for a child we had yet to meet. We called various offices until finding Amherst Pediatrics, where we were asked to come in, at no charge, to meet Dr. Hickman.

Not only did he welcome us at a time we were nervous, excited and anticipating the unknowns, he made sure that during our visit, we met every doctor and nurse in the practice who was there that day. He spent real time with us, even though we weren’t clients yet. When we received that coveted referral for a boy who was just 1½ months old, he saw us immediately to explain our medical report, understanding the urgency of communicating with our agency, and assured us that this boy was healthy.

When we returned home from Korea, he saw us the next day, marveling at this wondrous child, and, in a habit that has further endeared him to us, talked with Aidan, then 3 months old, about Aidan’s own health. He, and the rest of the staff at Amherst Pediatrics, have continued to be there for us in so many ways. Thank you, Dr. Hickman, and thank you for sharing your story with so many others.
