Notebook: UMass women’s lacrosse closing in on conference title

AMHERST — The University of Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team’s game Sunday could be a winner-take-all showdown for the Atlantic 10 regular season title.

If UMass (13-2, 5-0 A-10) wins at St. Bonaventure (0-5) Friday at 11 a.m., and Duquesne (4-1) beats La Salle (1-4) at 4 p.m., then Sunday’s noon game between the Dukes and Minutewomen at McGuirk Stadium will determine who will win the league title and be the No. 1 seed in next week’s Atlantic 10 tournament.

Sunday’s game will also be senior day for the Minutewomen, who will honor the Sarah Mullen, Cori Murray, Kelsey Palmer and Lauren Terracciano.

UMass has won 10 straight heading into this weekend. Duquesne (9-5) has won six of its last seven.

MUST WIN — For the UMass men’s lacrosse team to have a chance to defend its CAA tournament championship, the Minutemen (5-7, 0-4 CAA) need to beat Hofstra (7-5, 2-2) on Saturday at 7 p.m. on Long Island and have four other games go their way.

UMass needs Penn State (9-3, 4-0) to beat Delaware (5-8, 1-3) on Saturday. On April 26, the Minutemen would have to beat Delaware (7 p.m. at Garber Field). Then UMass would need Towson (7-6, 3-1) to beat Saint Joseph’s (5-8) in Maryland and Penn State to win at Hofstra.

CONFERENCE WEEKEND — The UMass softball team (14-17, 8-2 Atlantic 10) will try to solidify its hold on second place with a Sunday doubleheader against George Washington (18-17, 5-3 A-10) at noon at Sortino Field.

UMass has two conference series next week. It travels to Rhode Island (9-24, 2-7) for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The Minutewomen are at first-place Saint Joseph’s (26-4-1, 9-1) on April 26-27.

TENNIS TOURNAMENT — The No. 3-seeded Minutewomen beat Dayton 5-0 Thursday and will play the winner between No. 6 George Washington and No. 11 Saint Joseph’s at 1 p.m. Friday.

RUN FOR BOSTON — The UMass men’s and women’s track and field teams will take part in Sunday’s Run for Boston at Stanley Park in Westfield. The 10 a.m. race will have food, music and opportunities to donate to those affected by Monday’s bombings at the Boston Marathon.

ELSEWHERE — The baseball team plays at La Salle Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (noon). ... Members of the track and field teams are at Holy Cross’ Heptathlon (women) and Decathlon (men) on Friday morning and the Holy Cross Invitational Saturday. Both events begin at 11 a.m. ... UMass women’s rowing will be at MIT Saturday.
