Robert Gould: Limiting use of Glendale Road transfer station ‘big mistake’

To the editor:

As a regular user of the Glendale Road transfer station, I am dismayed at the thought process of our city managers, who have decided to greatly restrict residents’ access to the facility. With springtime yard cleaning season approaching, it is hard to believe the city will no longer allow the Glendale Road station to accept yard debris on Saturdays, and only 18 times (the dates are yet to be determined) per year at the Locust Street facility.

Wait until the next series of bad thunderstorms arrive. Just what does the city expect its citizens to do with their yard debris?

Did the city ever perform a traffic and environmental study regarding the increased usage of the Locust Street facility? A traffic officer is now required on Saturdays, but with the increased usage this may become a necessity on additional days — at an increased cost.

The logic of essentially closing the Glendale Road facility as a recycling and debris collection area is a big mistake.

The carbon footprint of everyone driving greater distances to Locust Street has just increased.

I foresee yard waste and other debris being dumped in the rural streets of our town due to the inconvenience dictated by our city managers. Locust Street, by itself, cannot adequately handle the volume of recycling and debris that the city currently takes in. Just you wait and watch to see what happens.

It’s the people who use these facilities on a frequent basis who understand the situation.
