Every year at media day, the Atlantic 10’s men’s basketball coaches talk about how good the league is going to be. The ensuing season has rarely backed up those claims as loudly as this one has.

The league earned five bids to the NCAA tournament and so far, all five teams have backed up the league’s earlier claims as no conference got through the second round of the tournament with more success than the A-10.

Including La Salle’s 80-71 win over Boise State in the play-in game Wednesday night, the league is 6-0 as all five teams have advanced to the round of 32.

After Butler, Virginia Commonwealth and Saint Louis won as higher seeds Thursday, the league snared a pair of upsets Friday. No. 9 Temple edged No. 8 North Carolina State, 76-72 and No. 13 La Salle stunned No. 4 Kansas State, 63-61.

“It really is exciting. I can’t say how proud I am of all the players and teams and coaches. It’s one thing to get in the tournament. It’s another thing to win,” Atlantic 10 commissioner Bernadette McGlade said. “It’s another example of how deep this league is and how strong from top to bottom the A-10 is. We’re not defined by just one or two programs. We’re a pretty deep league.”

The Atlantic 10 is one of only two conferences to be undefeated with at least two wins. The other, the Missouri Valley, is 2-0.

Three league teams will be in action Saturday — No. 5 Virginia Commonwealth will face No. 4 Michigan, at 12:15 p.m. in Auburn Hills, Mich.; Saint Louis will play Oregon, Saturday at 7 p.m. in San Jose, Calif.; No. 6 Butler will face No. 3 Marquette at 7:45 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.

On Sunday at times to be determined, La Salle will face No. 12 Mississippi in Kansas City, Mo. and Temple will play No. 1 seed Indiana, in Dayton, Ohio.

No. 13 La Salle 63, No. 4 Kansas State 61 — Jerrell Wright made three foul shots in the final 30 seconds, and No. 13 seed La Salle advanced after blowing an 18-point halftime lead to beat fourth-seeded Kansas State.

Wright, who scored a game-high 21 points for the Explorers (22-9), made the first two free throws to give La Salle a 62-61 lead. Kansas State’s Jordan Henriquez missed in the paint at the other end, and Wright made the first of two more free throws with 9.6 seconds to go.

The Wildcats (27-8) raced down court, but point guard Angel Rodriguez got hung up in the corner by the Kansas State bench, and his off-balance shot over the corner of the backboard missed everything as the final buzzer sounded and the Explorers leaped off their bench to celebrate the upset.

No. 9 Temple 76, No. 8 North Carolina State 72 — Khalif Wyatt scored 31 points, finishing the game with an injured left thumb that had him grimacing before his clinching free throws, and Temple broke with its one-and-done NCAA tournament trend.

The ninth-seeded Owls (24-9) opened a 17-point lead before Wyatt — the Atlantic 10’s player of the year and top scorer — hurt his left thumb and left the game briefly, returning with black tape on the non-shooting hand.

Every shot was an adventure, but he made enough — including six painful but perfect free throws in the final 32 seconds — to keep Temple around for more than one game. The Owls had lost their opener in four of their last five NCAA trips.

NC State (24-11) trailed most of the game and came up short of a deep tournament run on the 30th anniversary of its national title.

Richard Howell had 14 points and 15 rebounds for NC State.
