State education official to consult after resignation

Sherri Killins stepped down amid questions about whether her participation in a school superintendent training program in the town of Ware was taking significant time away from her nearly $200,000-a-year state job.

The Boston Herald reports that Killins will serve as an outside consultant, working from her home in New Haven, Conn. A spokesman for the state Education Department says she’ll help in the transition to her successor.

Killins said earlier that her resignation Monday had nothing to do with the superintendent mentoring program.

Gov. Deval Patrick said Tuesday he appreciated Killins’ contributions as commissioner and wished her well.
