Justine Bertram: Congress pushed postal service into red

To the editor:

While the Feb. 18 editorial “Saving the post office,” regarding the United States Postal Service, made some valid points, I was very surprised that no mention was made as to the main reason why the USPS is in such dire straits. Since 2006, before the gavel was passed to Nancy Pelosi, Congress mandated that the USPS fund its pension 75 years into the future. Indeed, if this were not the case, the USPS would be in the black by quite a lot.

The USPS operates as an independent business using no tax dollars for its operations, yet cannot implement business decisions independent of Congress. The same people in power that would like to privatize Social Security, education and anything else they can get their hands on also want to privatize mail services. Both UPS and Fed Ex have contributed substantially to members of Congress to advance this agenda.
