Amherst’s Kevin Ziomek fans 15, throws one-hitter for No. 2 Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt junior Kevin Ziomek pitched one of the best games of his collegiate career Friday.
The southpaw from Amherst struck out a career-high 15 and allowed one hit in a complete-game 9-0 victory over Illinois-Chicago in Nashville, Tenn.
Ziomek (3-0) allowed a leadoff single to left in the second. He walked three and threw 114 pitches.
The No. 2-ranked Commodores (10-1) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth then added three more in the sixth. A five-run eighth put the game out of reach.
Notre Dame 9, UMass 4 — Anthony Serino (RBI), Nik Campero (RBI) and Brandon Walsh each had two hits but the Minutemen dropped their opener on the road.
