Dial-in program to offer free legal help

— The Hampshire County Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service will sponsor a Dial-A-Lawyer call-in program March 13 to give residents with legal concerns free advice from volunteer attorneys.

Hampshire County residents will be able to call the service’s hotline any time between 5 and 8 p.m. to receive free consultation from panel attorneys.

According to Lawyer Referral Service committee member Seunghee Cha, the program will include about half a dozen lawyers, though more are still being recruited.

She said the program is designed to promote community outreach and service.

“We’re modeling it after the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Dial-A-Lawyer program,” said Cha.

“Our membership consists of attorneys that practice in virtually every field of the law you can think of,” said Cha. “We’re hoping that we can address most people’s concerns and be able to give them advice and answer most of their questions.”

Cha said the legal issues that callers will be able to discuss over the hotline could include family law or divorce, creditor issues and bankruptcy, real estate disputes, business transaction and contracts, criminal law and employment law.

To reach the hotline, call 586-8729. Spanish- and Korean-speaking attorneys will be available if needed. Normal telephone charges will apply.
