Philip Fitz: Pet/patient visits nothing new at Cooley Dickinson

To the editor:

I was amused to read in the Feb. 26 health section (“Pet project”) that a large hospital was breaking new ground in allowing a patient to see his/her pet.

As usual, Northampton and Cooley Dickinson Hospital are ahead of the curve.

In 2001, my partner was in Cooley Dickinson and very seriously ill.

The nurses said of course I could bring our beloved shih tzu in to see him.

They assured me that the entire room was completely disinfected between patients, and that the patients’ diseases were far more dangerous than anything the dog might carry.

My partner loved seeing his dog. He died less than 10 hours afterward from a massive heart attack.

I am comforted to this day by the joy in his face seeing his dog, and by the compassionate care provided by the hospital and its staff.

Philip Fitz
