Michaela O’Brien: McGovern event for all, not just insiders

I attended the Feb. 22 opening of U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern’s new Northampton office, but found the Gazette’s description of attendees, “Dozens of local officials, political staffers and Democratic activists ...” didn’t accurately describe the turnout.

I am a constituent of our new congressman and was curious — and happy — that we now have a U.S. representative’s office right here in the Valley, so I went to the event. The use in particular of the word “activist” as a catch-all to refer to the non-officials and non-political staffers in attendance, is off-putting to anyone looking to simply meet their representative.

This event was open to the public and the public attended.
