Harry Warner: Why not abolish political parties?

To the editor:

Well, folks, here we go again. While our country spirals down the drain again, our elected representatives in Congress are once again playing the blame game and voting along party lines, even though I am sure many do not necessarily agree with that line. Their vote is also influenced by PACs and other fat cats who they rely on for campaign “contributions.”

I cannot help but wonder what would happen if political parties were abolished and candidates were elected based on their own merits and not by the party who had the most voters in their districts. The elected officials and their staff would not have to focus all of their attention on these PACs in order to get re-elected and could instead use their resources to listen to their constituents and vote the way they think. I realize that this is a radical idea that could never happen, but it’s just a thought.
