Frankie Weir of Hampshire, Taj-Amir Torres of Amherst take third in All-State wrestling, track, respectively
Two local athletes earned third place finishes at all-state championship meets on Saturday.
Frankie Weir of Hamphire Regional, wrestled his way to third in the 170-pound weight class in the All-State tournament at Salem High School.
Taj-Amir Torres of Amherst, meanwhile, earned the bronze in the 55-meter dash at the All-State meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Weir, who went 2-0 on Friday to advance to Saturday’s semifinals, fell to eventual champion Alexe Restivo-Lage of Natick, 5-3, in the semifinals to drop into the consolation bracket.
The match was the closest of the tournament for Restivo-Lage.
Weir then defeated Sean Murphy of Weymouth, 8-5, to reach the third-place bout, during which he beat Peter Hailer of Milton, 2-1.
Weir will wrestle in the New England championship meet set for Friday and Saturday at the Providence Career and Technical Center.
Torres, the PVIAC and Division 2 state champion in the 55, settled for third with a time of 6.54 seconds.
The time was just off his personal best set of 6.48 at the state meet.
Torres finished behind PJ Hayes (6.47) of Walpole and Alex Mayhew (6.50) of Haverhill.
The sophomore will next race at the New England championship back at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday.
Williston 44, Choate 30 — Natalia Ovando scored a game-high 20 points and Mary McCarthy added 10 points and nine rebounds as the Wildcats (10-9) closed out their season with a win Saturday in Wallingford, Conn.
