Bill Paul: Volunteers helped make Sunderland ski event a success
To the editor:
Jim Ewen, the Franklin County sports commissioner and coordinator, took advantage of this month’s big snowstorm to host the Sunderland Elementary School ski event on the school grounds Feb. 16.
Parents also stepped up as assistant ski instructors for the day, helping the fledgling young skiers get started.
Traci Sackrey was instrumental in fitting the youngsters with the proper size skis and boots. The makeshift biathalon course, in which kids tossed short pieces of wooden dowels to topple wooden blocks before racing to the finish line, provided a unique challenge and fun for participants. And those who donated skis and boots for this program are most appreciated.
The day could be judged an unequivocal success by the smiles on the faces of the young nordic skiers. This is proof of what can be accomplished through an inclusive community effort.
