Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce breakfast to focus on student drinking

Sally Linowski, an assistant dean of students at the University of Massachusetts, will be the keynote speaker at the breakfast, which runs from 7:15 to 9 a.m. at the Hampshire College Red Barn.

Linowski, who serves as co-chairwoman of the Campus and Community Coalition to Reduce High-Risk Drinking, will talk about ways the coalition is promoting improved health, safety and well being of students.

The coalition is in the midst of developing strategies for dealing with issues such as so-called “pre-gaming” in dormitory rooms, when students consume alcohol before going out for the night, and the issue of walking through residential neighborhoods near the university to locate parties to attend.

It began working in 2005 and since then risky drinking has decreased as its plans have been implemented, said Linowski.

The breakfast is $15 for members and $20 for non members.

For more information, call the chamber at 253-0700.
