Easthampton establishes Energy Advisory Committee

City residents with an interest in energy are wanted to join a newly formed committee to help the city make wise decisions regarding energy.

The City Council Wednesday approved the creation of the Energy Advisory Committee, which will advise and assist the city “in developing priorities, policies and programs focused on cost-effective energy use, energy conservation and renewable energy generation,” according to the committee description. It will advise municipal groups on everything from reducing greenhouse gases to adopting new energy sources, and can also promote “sound local energy education programs” in the community, according to the description.

Mayor Michael A. Tautznik said the recommendation to form the committee came from the Master Plan Implementation Committee, which determined that an advisory body would help the city pursue the master plan goal of increasing sustainable energy and efficiency.

“They’ll deal with all kinds of energy — fossil fuels, bio-gas, electricity, solar,” Tautznik said at the council meeting. “I think we’re always going to need an energy committee.”

It will be made up of five regular members and two associate members, to be appointed by Tautznik for three-year terms. For information on joining the volunteer board, contact Tautznik at 529-1470 or miket@easthampton.org.
