SOUTH HADLEY — A fire engulfed a building at 20-24 Bridge St. on Monday night, sending smoke billowing through South Hadley Falls.

The free-standing brick building houses the Crack of Dawn restaurant and a former Domino’s pizza shop, which was being renovated.

The fire was reported at 7:53 p.m., with firefighters from Fire Districts 1 and 2 responding. Holyoke provided station coverage for District 1.

Firefighters were attacking the blaze from all sides of the one-story structure, including from a ladder truck that extended over the structure. They expected to remain on the scene until early morning.

Smoke could be seen coming out from all sides of the building, including the large window openings facing the street.

Police blocked off Bridge Street at both ends, detouring traffic traveling to and from Holyoke.

The Crack of Dawn opened in 1977 as Buddha’s, changing to its current name in 1996 and becoming a popular place for breakfast and lunch under its former owner, the late Louis Conti.

The building was used in the 1960s and 1970s to house Dinn Brothers Trophy Manufacturing, which later moved to Holyoke and is now based in West Springfield.

This wasn’t the first time the neighborhood, which includes several apartments and bars, as well as Town Hall and the police station, has been affected by fire.

In December 1992, the Cowan Block, at the corner of Bridge and Main streets, was damaged by fire and torn down as it was undergoing renovation. That lot, which is immediately next to Crack of Dawn, remains vacant.
