UMass hockey falls short in Vermont 

Brandon Gracel’s goal with 1 minute, 28 seconds left put the University of Massachusetts hockey team within one, but the Minutemen couldn’t find the equalizer in a 3-2 loss to Vermond in Burlington, Vt., Saturday.

The Minutemen (9-12-2,6-9-1 Hockey East) saw the Catamounts take a 3-1 lead after two periods and Gracel made it a one-goal deficit after UMass pulled its goalie.

It was Gracel’s 11th goal on the year. Michael Pereira had the other goal for the Minutemen.

Steve Mastalerz stopped 22 shots for UMass.

Trinity 7, Amherst 4 — Brian Safstrom scored twice and added an assist for the Lord Jeffs (11-5-2, 7-4-1 NESCAC) at home Saturday.

Johnny Van Siclen and Andrew Kurlandski also scored for Amherst.

Women’s hockey

Amherst 3, Connecticut College 2, OT; Connecticut College 1, Amherst 0 — The Lord Jeffs split two their two-game series at home over the weekend.

After a shutout loss Saturday, Tori Salmon scored 56 seconds into overtime to lift the Lord Jeffs Sunday.

Erin Martin and Madeline Tank also found the net for Amherst (8-7-1, 6-3-1 NESCAC).

Keri Stuart made a combined 36 saves in the two games.

Men’s basketball

Amherst 83, Trinity 55 — Peter Kaasila led the Lord Jeffs (17-2, 6-0 NESCAC) with 23 points in Saturday’s win at home.

Willy Workman of Northampton scored five points and is now 26 shy of 1,000 for his career.

Westfield State 70, Salem State 65 — Grant Cooper of Northampton scored 15 points and dished out five assists in Saturday’s win at home.

Women’s basketball

Dayton 83, UMass 44 — Jasmine Harris had eight points and five rebounds for the Minutewomen (3-17, 1-4 A-10) in Sunday’s loss on the road.

Amherst 67, Trinity 47 — Savannah Holness and Marcia Voigt scored 13 points each as the Lord Jeffs (19-0) remained unbeaten with Saturday’s home win.

Smith College 74, Wheaton 60 — Rosa Drummond scored 20 points for the Pioneers (16-2, 11-1 NEWMAC) in a road win Saturday.

Babson 70, Mount Holyoke 52 — Kate Karraker had 14 points, but the Lyons (4-13, 2-10 NEWMAC) fell at home Saturday.

Kristen Ferola of Amherst scored nine points for the Beavers (17-2, 12-0).

Westfield State 81, Salem State 51 — Jenny Bell of Northampton had 14 points and five steals as the Owls (13-7, 5-2 MASCAC) won at home Saturday.

Men’s swimming & diving

MIT 178, Amherst 116 — Jeff Anderson won the 200-fly (1:53.31) but the Lord Jeffs lost at home Saturday.

Women’s swimming & diving

Amherst 169, MIT 129 — Emily Hyde took first in the 100-breaststroke (1:07.09), the 200-breaststroke (2:25.40) and the 200-IM (2:10.18) in Amherst’s home win Saturday.

Men’s track & field

Pat Grimes finished first (4:20.22) in the mile run as Amherst finished second at the Springfield Invitational Saturday.

Women’s track & field

Amherst placed third at the Springfield Invitational Saturday.

Keri Lambert of Amherst won the mile run (5:05.12) by nearly nine seconds for the Lord Jeffs.

Men’s squash

Wesleyan 6, Amherst 3; Williams 8, Amherst 1 — The Lord Jeffs dropped a pair on Saturday.

Noah Brown had a pair of wins for Amherst.
