Community fundraisers created for victims of January house fires in Amherst

University of Massachusetts student James “Jake” Hoffman of Stoughton was killed Monday and 30 tenants, including four families and 20 UMass students, were left homeless in the fire that damaged 10 units in the complex at 422 Belchertown Road.

Fire investigators have not identified a cause of the fire.

Donations may be sent to the Rolling Green Fire Fund, 385 College St., Amherst.

For more information about the fund, call Sue Morrello at 256-6463.

A separate fund for Stephanie Jernigan, who safely escaped the fire with her two children but lost all her belongings, is being managed online. It can be accessed at www.youcaring.com/help-a-neighbor/Amherst-mother-and-children-who-lost-everything-in-Rolling-Green-fire/40203

Meanwhile, people are still trying to help the Peshkov family, whose Leverett Road home was destroyed in a Jan. 7 fire.

Coordinators Megan Rosa and Shannon Borrell have been soliciting volunteers to drop off household supplies by Sunday morning.

To sign up to assist, go to http://vols.pt/D7KN2z.

“We really need people to bring the household supplies that were asked for so we can get the Peshkovs back on their feet,” said Rosa, in an email. “We are hoping to have that all by Sunday afternoon.”
