Second Amherst sighting dismissed as helicopter

A week after reports surfaced that an unidentified flying object had been seen in town, police took a report Tuesday at 7:54 p.m. from a woman on South Pleasant Street who said she saw a group of three lights, in the shape of a triangle, passing over the road and proceeding toward the Amherst College campus.

Police Detective David Foster said an officer responded to the scene and was quickly able to determine what was traveling through the air — and it wasn’t a UFO.

“An officer observed similar lights,” Foster said. “They were helicopters’ (lights).”

On Jan. 8, police got one call about “lights in the sky” in South Amherst around 6 p.m., but didn’t investigate. Westover Air Reserve Base officials reported no aircraft flying over the town at that time.
