Writer questions logic of arming US citizens

To the editor:

The writer of a Jan. 12 letter maintains that the Second Amendment guarantees Americans the right to whatever weapon they feel they need to protect themselves. That is so silly as to be nearly beneath serious comment.

The writer says, “It’s only common sense and logical: If people are as well-armed as the government, then government will not suppress the people.” This is ridiculous: What citizen, or groups of citizens, could possibly be as well armed as the United States government? Modern governments like ours control firepower that is simply unimaginable. Would the writer have the citizenry arm itself with tanks, jet fighters and destroyers? Why stop there? How about a tactical nuclear weapon in the garage? That’ll make those tyrants in Washington think twice before they invade our homes!
