Boston College hires former UMass coach Don Brown as defensive coordinator
With three starters graduating and one freshman contributor transferring, the University of Massachusetts badly needs offensive linemen ready to step in for 2013.
The Minutemen are hoping they found that in Josh Bruns, a 6-foot-6, 295-pound transfer from Glendale (Ariz.) Community College.
Bruns will enroll in January and take part in spring practice. He’ll have two years of eligibility at UMass.
“Josh will provide immediate depth to our offensive line and give us much needed experience at the tackle position. Josh possesses the characteristics that we look for in every player: smart, disciplined and tough,” UMass coach Charley Molnar said in a statement. “I look forward to his arrival in January and getting him acclimated to the Minuteman Way.”
Bruns helped lead Glendale to an 8-3 record this past season.
A native of Bullhead City, Ariz., Bruns was a second-team all-state selection as a high school senior.
DON BROWN HIRED AT BOSTON COLLEGE — Former UMass football coach Don Brown was hired as the defensive coordinator at Boston College Wednesday. Brown spent the last two years as the defensive coordinator at Connecticut and the two years before that in the same role at Maryland.
Brown was the head coach at UMass from 2004-08. He led the Minutemen to the 2006 FCS championship game.
“We’re very excited to have Don Brown joining our Boston College family,” new BC coach Steve Addazio said in a statement. “Don is a New England guy who has tremendous ties and relationships in the Northeast to go along with a great coaching resume. ... He has tremendous character and is a great family man who is a perfect fit here at Boston College.”
Brown’s hiring means he’s been the defensive coordinator or head coach at seven different New England Division I schools.
