Gun owners deserve say on control legislation

To the editor:

As a parent and gun owner I was horrified at the tragic loss of innocent lives in Newtown, Conn. I am equally disturbed at recent editorial page comments, to the effect of “if you’re going to kill anything, then kill the Second Amendment,” or that it’s time to do something about the Second Amendment.

The Founding Fathers were not just a bunch of foolish old men putting something on paper without purpose. The obvious purpose is so that you and I can protect ourselves and our families. As with all the other past shootings, such as at Columbine and Virginia Tech, the police involvement is only after the fact. They simply cannot be everywhere for the protection of the public.

I and others often wonder if someone in the schools with training in firearms could have prevented such tragedies from occurring. The real issue is not firearms or the Second Amendment but the lack of mental health services and the lack of spirituality, as one writer stated. There needs to be something in place that can identify those individuals who exhibit the potential to commit such acts and provide early intervention to that individual.

As with past tragedies, the red flags that were there from the very beginning only become apparent after the fact. On a final note, unless you have been on the receiving end of violence, as both my wife and I have in our past careers, you cannot possibly understand the security and comfort having a gun provides to us.

It is my hope that we do not become a society where lawful gun owners are perceived as some new evil. As Tom Brokaw stated on the morning news, gun owners need also to be heard in the discussions on gun control.
