Daily Hampshire Gazette columnist John Engel will host a Fatherhood Journey gathering Wednesday, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Cup & Top Café in Florence.

This gathering will give fathers an opportunity to speak from the heart, listen and lend support as the group discusses the Newtown, Conn., tragedy and offers gratitude for the gift of life we share with our families.

The Fatherhood Journey events are quarterly gatherings for all types and ages of fathers who are interested in connecting to, sharing with and learning from other men.

This cost is $5 to $10, sliding scale fee.

Thanks to a $2,500 donation, Cooley Dickinson Hospital will offer a new professional development opportunity to its nurses who practice medical-surgical nursing. This gift allows these nurses unlimited access to e-learning training materials that can prepare the nurses to attain certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

“Med-surg nursing encompasses becoming a master in 11 specialty areas of nursing,” said Amy Gleason, R.N., clinical coordinator for medical-surgical services, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurologic.

In order to qualify for the exam, nurses need to hold Massachusetts licensure, have practiced an equivalent of two years full time, and must have worked 2,000 hours in med-surg nursing.

The annual gift will help more than 30 med-surg nurses become stronger in their clinical practice as they pursue the in-depth learning that certification requires.
