Colleges: Smith College cruised past MCLA

Rosa Drummond posted a double-double and Amanda Zakoske had a fine all-around game as the Smith College basketball team beat MCLA 77-46 Wednesday in Northampton.

Drummond finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year, while Zakoske added 15 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, and two assists for the Pioneers (8-1).

Sydney Parkmond (nine rebounds) and Florence native Lauren Weston each had eight points.

Defense led the way for Smith, which forced 33 turnovers.

Women’s volleyball

Amherst twins Heather and Jennifer Mears were recently honored by Western New England University.

Heather Mears was named the program’s Iron Woman for second time. Jennifer Mears was named Golden Bear Teammate of the Year.

Heather Mears was a senior setter who led the Commonwealth Coast Conference with 1,055 assists, which ranks second all-time in a single season at WNE. In her first season as a full-time starter, she earned second-team all-CCC honors. She finished her career with 1,471 assists to rank third all-time in program history. The Iron Woman Award goes to the hardest-working player on the team.

Jennifer Mears finished the season with 236 digs in 115 sets. The defensive specialist started in 22 of the team’s 32 matches. She finished her four-year career with 598 digs. The Golden Bear Teammate of the Year is awarded to the player most exemplifying all the qualities of being a true teammate.
